New Zealand-based cryptocurrency exchange Cryptopia, just announced through their official Twitter page that the exchange has been hacked.

Cryptopia had been down for roughly 24 hours since 14 January 10:00 UTC, announcing that the website was experiencing unscheduled maintenance.

We apologize for the delay in keeping you updated and appreciate your patience.

Yesterday 14th January 2019, the Cryptopia Exchange suffered a security breach which resulted in significant losses. Once identified by staff, the exchange was put into maintenance while we assessed damages.

The announcement didn’t specify the amount of the damages.

However, a huge transfer of ERC 20 tokens from Cryptopia’s hot wallet was recorded on Etherscan. According to the records, about 48 million tokens worth approximately 1176596 USD were transferred to an unknown wallet.

The crypto community is reading mischief regarding this huge transfer and some are even calling it an exit scam.
